The Power of Sacred Sound: Mantras & Japa Sadhana (मंत्र विज्ञान एवं जप विधि)
What is a Mantra? (मंत्र की परिभाषा)
The word Mantra originates from the Sanskrit roots "man" (the mind) and "tra" (to liberate or protect). A mantra is a concentrated sound vibration, syllable, or sacred formula revealed to ancient Vedic Rishis during deep states of meditative contemplation (dhyana).
Components of a Vedic Mantra (मंत्र के षडंग)
Every classical mantra is traditionally associated with six elements: the Rishi (the seer who perceived it), the Chhandas (poetic meter), the Devata (presiding deity), the Beeja (seed syllable), the Shakti (activating power), and the Kilaka (the pin or lock holding its potency).
Principles of Japa Sadhana (जप एवं एकाग्रता)
Repetition of a mantra (Japa) can be performed audibly (Vaikhari), whispered (Upamshu), or mentally (Manasika—considered the most subtle and potent). Regular practice during Brahma Muhurta with a calm mind harmonizes brain waves and cultivates inner peace.
