The Sacred Tradition of Chalisa in Sanatan Dharma (चालीसा परंपरा एवं महत्व)
What is a Chalisa? (चालीसा क्या है?)
A Chalisa (derived from "chalis", meaning forty in Hindi) is a devotional prayer consisting of forty poetic verses or chaupais, traditionally framed by opening and closing dohas (couplets). Unlike complex Vedic rituals requiring specialized priestly knowledge, the Chalisa was composed in regional literary idioms—principally Awadhi and Braj Bhasha—to make devotional communion accessible to every seeker.
Origins & Saintly Authorship
The Chalisa tradition reached its zenith during the medieval Bhakti movement. The most revered exemplar is the Shri Hanuman Chalisa, composed by Goswami Tulsidas in the 16th century. Following this sacred blueprint, devotion to Lord Shiva, Shri Ganesha, Goddess Durga, Goddess Lakshmi, and Shri Krishna was crystallized into forty-verse hymns that celebrate divine virtues, protective grace, and cosmic deeds.
Structure & Practice of Recitation (पाठ विधि)
Each Chalisa traditionally begins with invocation dohas that cultivate humility and cleanse the seeker's mind. The forty chaupais follow a rhythmic musical meter, recounting the divine attributes, pastimes, and blessings of the deity. The prayer concludes with a benediction doha. Daily recitation, particularly during morning or evening twilight (sandhya), fosters mental serenity, concentration, and devotional absorption.
