The Vedic & Devotional Significance of Aarti (आरती का आध्यात्मिक रहस्य)
What is an Aarti? (आरती का स्वरूप)
Aarti (from Sanskrit "Aratrika", meaning that which dispels darkness) is the climactic ritual of Hindu worship. Waving a lit wick—infused with ghee or camphor—in circular clockwise patterns before the sacred murti symbolizes the dispelling of spiritual ignorance (avidya) through divine light.
The Five Elements in Worship (पंचोपचार भाव)
The flame of the Aarti plate represents the fire element (Agni), accompanied by the sound of conch shells and bells (Akasha/ether), the fragrance of flowers and incense (Prithvi/earth), and the devotion of the heart. Devotees reverently take the warmth of the sanctified flame over their hands and crown, receiving divine grace and purifying the senses.
Traditional Hymns & Composition
The Aartis compiled on DevDhun—such as Om Jai Jagdish Hare (composed by Shradha Ram Phillauri) and Shendur Lal Chadhayo (Gosavinandan)—are poetic masterpieces celebrating divine sovereignty, righteousness, and surrender (sharanagati).
